Frequently Asked Questions

Because we’re always a bit curious…

What kind of travel provider are you?

When we were discovering Switzerland by bicycle, we started to notice everyone was always going to the popular and generally busy roads and mountain passes. Large groups were basically checking off the bucket list of well-known, busy mountain passes.
It was too crowded on these roads.

That’s when we decided to do things different.

Sidetrack Cycling is about exploration of the undiscovered, it’s an overall experience of soaking up natural beauty, local culture, food and lodging in authentic places.
The areas we guide you through are quiet, fairly secluded and extraordinary, there’s less traffic (some roads cars are restricted) and there’s enough time and space to focus on enjoying the ride and all the natural surroundings.

Where are you based?

Sidetrack Cycling has its main office in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the land with endless bike paths! If we’re not in Amsterdam, we’ll be out and about discovering new roads for our trips!
In town? Drop us a line, we’d be happy to chat about any of our trips - or just head out on a ride.

We like to keep things very personal, this is why we keep the size of the groups limited to 7 or 8 people. Safety is very important to us and this is one way of creating the safest environment possible for your dream holiday. Contact us regarding larger groups, custom trips or incentives.
Our client/guide ratio is 1:8 So, on a 8-person trip, expect one guide to be attending at all times. SAG wagon booked? We’ll have an extra pair of eyes to watch over you.

How large are the groups?

Do I have to be really fit to join?

Sidetrack cyclists will ride an average of 70-90 km a day with around 1000 meters of elevation gain.
You should feel comfortable riding in a small group and be able to at least climb for an hour uninterrupted.
Both the Valley of Angels departure and the Swiss Randonnée are fully customisable. Get in touch to discuss your dream itinerary.
Expect some climbs to be in the double-digit percentages, some roads are steep in Switzerland, we are in the Alps!

Do I bring my own road bike?

We encourage and recommend to use your own bicycle. You feel safer, more accustomed and comfortable on your own bike.
Remember: comfort inspires confidence!
Nowadays, flying with your bicycle in a standard bike case is very reliable.

In the event that you do not wish to travel with your bike, we’re happy to facilitate a bike hire at the destination for the duration of the trip. You will be the contact person with the rental company and be able to request the bike that’s right for you, as well go over any details or questions you may have.

What other gear do I need to bring?

Besides your bicycle in good working condition, you'll need the mandatory helmet, shoes, three changes of kit (all-weather conditions) and, besides legs of steel, an iron will :-)
Once you're confirmed on a trip, we will send you a packing list for your specific trip or race.

Transportation.

Travel to and from the destination is not included. The destinations are easily accessible by car, train and/or airplane. It’s recommended you travel by car or train, this is the more efficient, economical and cleaner mode of transport.
Your travels should be smooth and comfortable, please let us know if you have any plans to arrive early and/or extend your trip, we’d love to look at the options for you.
Do you need an airport transfer? Let us know, we are happy to arrange something for you.

Do the hotels have parking, are the train stations nearby?

The hotel we (usually) start our cycling adventures from is very accessible.

The following applies:

• Free car parking in front of the hotel (based on “first come, first served”).
• The hotel is only a few steps away from the train station (it’s literally across the street).
